Kathmandu, Sep, 2015 Women rights activists demanding citizenship in the name of mother started a relay hunger strike from last Wednesday. The hunger strike is a part of Collective Campaign, a network of organizations working in the field of women rights demanding gender-friendly provision in the constitution, to put pressure on the government to change the provision in the draft constitution which denies women the right to pass on citizenship to her children.

Durga Sob FEDO, Dr.Renu Rajbhandari Women Rehabilitation Centre, SharmilaKarki NGO federation, ChandaRai Shrestha Sankalpa, Jharana Yogi of Sathi kick started the hunger strike from Wednesday afternoon.

According to Durga Sob President of FEDO the hunger strike will continue till the deadline of registration amendment bill to revise provisions in the draft constitution which ends in September 5. "We knocked on the door of President, PM and other top politicians asking them to grant mother the same right as father to provide citizenship to her children but they paid no heed" said Sob.

"We tried to draw government's attention through peaceful protest and mass rallies. But to no avail. Through this hunger strike, we ask lawmaker to amend the discriminatory provisions," said Durga Sob of Feminist Dalit Organization (FEDO).

During the period of hunger strike Kala Swarnakar Secretary General of FEDO, Punyawati Ramtel, Renu Sijapati and other Dalit Women were jointly participated in the strike. They all are demanding women and Dalit women's rights in new constitution. ''Hunger strike will be continuing until constitution will not release with including women and Dalit women's right in new constitution.'' Dalit women activist Kala Swarnakar said.
