24 February, 2015, Kathmandu, Feminist Dalit Organization (FEDO) met with Honorable Chairperson of United Nations Committee on Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) on 24th February 2015. During the interaction, Ms. Durga Sob, President of the organization gave a presentation on “Situation of Dalit Women in Nepal”. During the interaction, Dalit women form different part of the country namely Banke, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Lalitpur and Kathmandu shared the problems they are facing in their day to day life with Honorable Chairperson.
The Chairperson addressed the meeting and expressed his gratitude towards FEDO for providing an opportunity to interact with grassroots Dalit women. He said that the CERD committee is in cloud but he came in an interaction with the real world. He felt sorry for not getting this opportunity before and said if it had happened earlier, the CERD committee recommendation to Nepal government would have been stronger and Dalit women focused. He suggested FEDO to prepare a shadow report by responding the CERD committee recommendation to Nepal and Dalit women experiences shared in the forum. He said that it has not been too late to address Dalit women issues and situation in Nepal and expressed his commitment that on the basis of shadow report sent by FEDO, the committee will make strong recommendations to the Nepal government being focused on Dalit women. The Chairperson is in his informal visit to Nepal.
FEDO is a national level Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) founded in 1994 to establish the rights of Dalit women by organizing and empowering them for their mainstreaming into national development. [+ read more]
